Steel Bonded TiC: Grade Selection for Custom Metal Parts 

What you see is an Atomic Force Imaging of a polished surface of our Ferro-TiCŪ CM grade alloy bonded titanium carbide.  The rounded titanium carbide (TiC) particles exposed on the surface of these materials provide a combination of low coefficient of friction and a hardness 30% higher than tungsten carbide (WC).  This unique combination makes the alloy bonded TiC materials especially suited for wear resistant applications.
Ferro-TiCŪ Steel alloy bonded titanium carbide (TiC) materials are made by advanced powder metallurgy technologies. Unlike tungsten carbide, Ferro-TiCŪ is bonded by hardenable alloy matrices.

Ferro-TiCŪ Unique Characteristics

Ferro-TiCŪ provides the lightweight, size, stability, and hardness.
Ferro-TiCŪ is virtually porosity free - significantly better than the A1 ASTM B-276-79 Standard.
Low specific mass. Ferro-TiCŪ is 10-20% lighter than its steel counterpart and
     about 50% lighter than tungsten carbide.
10 times the wear resistance of tool steels
Economical fabrication
      - conventionally machinable in the annealed stage by milling, turning, etc.
      - conventionally heat treatable to achieve high hardness.
50-90% less linear size change in heat treat than tool steels

Ferro TicŪ Properties Tables

The properties tables below provide technical data for many of the existing grades of Ferro-TiCŪ.  Some may have superior thermal shock resistance.  Some are magnetic, some are nonmagnetic.  Some operate under cryogenic conditions. Some offer excellent resistance to vibration. The Grades listed are those generally used for these particular purposes. However, they can and have been modified to meet specific operating requirements.

C Excellent vibration dampening in the annealed condition, excellent cryogenic properties. Replaces A-2 tool steel. Highly Magnetic.
CM For warm metalworking, drawing and forming. Replaces D-2 tool steel. Magnetic.
SK Excellent impact strength. Increased wear resistance over CM-25 and CHW-25. Replaces S-7 tool steel. Magnetic.
CS-40 High hardness with corrosion resistance of 400 series stainless steels. Magnetic.
PK Combination of excellent transverse rupture strength, impact strength, and corrosion resistance. Good thermal shock resistance. Magnetic.
MS-5A Excellent corrosion resistance. Excellent size stability at elevated temperatures. Replaces 27-4 PH Stainless. Slightly magnetic. An FDA approved material.
HT-6A Excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance at high temperatures. Replaces StelliteTM/InconelTM. Non-magnetic.
